The hour before everyone else is awake belongs to whoever is up. The kitchen at five forty-five with nobody else in it. The to-do list that is still hypothetical. The work that happens before email starts. None of it lasts. By eight thirty the day belongs to everybody. The hour you stole from it is the one you remember, and it usually needed something to push against to be worth stealing.
A bare tree at the edge of a Provençal lavender field catches the sun before anybody else has bothered to wake up. Branches dead for years break the light into points. The lavender below glows where the rays touch it and stays cool blue where they do not. By eight the sun has cleared the horizon, the light has gone flat, and the field looks like every other lavender field. The tree goes back to waiting.
