The town you grew up in turns up wrapped in October fog and you notice every roofline you had stopped seeing fifteen years ago. The street you walk every morning goes white overnight, and the trees on it become trees again. The kitchen you have lived in for a decade, lit by a candle when the power has gone, looks like the kitchen of somebody else's life. The ordinary requires interruption to be seen. You are usually too busy living through it to interrupt it yourself.
Cypresses in central Italy normally stand against gold wheat or a summer sky going dark. The line they draw is so familiar you stop registering it. An unusual February brings snow down to the slopes, the wind ripples it overnight, and for two mornings the same trees you have driven past for years look like a place you have never been to. By Friday the snow is gone.
