You read it for the first time at fourteen. The towers, the grey stone, the mist, the figures making their way slowly through the valley between the spires. You loved the shapes without ever having seen anything like them in person. Twenty years later you are standing in southern China and you understand for the first time where the writer might have been looking when he wrote the part you remembered. He had never been here.
