The weeks settle into one another. The calendar empties out. Nothing in particular goes wrong. Three months later, when somebody asks you about August, you have to think for a moment to remember the details. It was warm. The shoes you wore got dusty. You read two and a half books. The rest has melted into a single light.

This is the picture of one of those afternoons, somewhere in Italy, in late August, in a sunflower field at the hour when the sun has dropped low enough to put a halo on everything still standing. The harvest will start within a week or two. For now, nothing has to happen yet.

Reads alongside Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, or any book read in a chair pulled out into the garden.

Summer Set

The summers you actually remember are usually three or four days of one specific summer. A particular town. A particular light. A particular evening when nobody was in a hurry. The rest of June, July, and August blurs into a single warm continent of weeks. The point is that those three or four days happened, and that the year refused to end for as long as they lasted. You spend the rest of the year hoping to bump into them again.
