Most of what reshapes a life moves too slowly to notice while it is happening. The town that changed shape between two visits twenty years apart. The friendship that became a friendship over long quiet stretches you did not notice at the time. The opinion you hold now that is the opposite of the one you held at twenty, and that you did not so much change as wear down. The slow things do most of the work.

A section of an Alpine glacier surface, seen from a small plane in late winter. The crevasses opened over a single year. The ridges between them move downhill at a few centimetres a day. The print on cotton paper holds the glacier in a shape it no longer has.

Sits alongside The Ice at the End of the World by Jon Gertner, Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez, or any book read on the warmer side of a window.

Winter Set

Winter does not add anything to a landscape. It takes away. Colour goes first, then detail, then sound. What is left is shape. A line of cypresses against a low sky. The arc of a frozen river. The blue of an iceberg you can hear cracking from a kilometre away. The world shows you only what it cannot hide, and the silence carries further than usual. It is a season that rewards being properly dressed and standing still.
