There are mornings worth setting an alarm clock you will not need. By the time you set up the tripod, the pink is half gone. By the time you pack up, you have been cold for an hour. Whatever you brought home from the morning, you paid for it with the fingers. The fingers know. They take a while to come back. The picture, when you look at it three weeks later, is worth what the fingers spent.

A glacial lake at first light. Three minutes either way and the conditions would be different. Wind up, surface rippled, mountain not quite mirrored. The iceberg moves slowly between two skies. The pink holds for nine minutes.

A natural fit for Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, Cold Earth by Sarah Moss, or any book read after a morning that asked you to get up earlier than you wanted to.

Winter Set

Winter does not add anything to a landscape. It takes away. Colour goes first, then detail, then sound. What is left is shape. A line of cypresses against a low sky. The arc of a frozen river. The blue of an iceberg you can hear cracking from a kilometre away. The world shows you only what it cannot hide, and the silence carries further than usual. It is a season that rewards being properly dressed and standing still.
