The blue of the sea you remember from a holiday is the blue the water actually was, not a filter someone put over it later. The yellow of a kitchen you grew up in was the colour the paint dried to, not the colour on the tin. The pink of the dress your sister wore to her wedding was the colour the silk actually held in afternoon light, not a memory you have brightened. The colours we remember best are the ones that came out of the thing itself.
Glacier water is turquoise because of tiny rock flour, ground from the bed of the ice, held in the water, scattering the blue back at you. The colour is the water, plus what the ice has been doing for ten thousand years. This is southwest Iceland in summer, where the river runs over a low stairway of basalt and broadcasts its colour into the air.

You hear a waterfall before you see it. The sound arrives from a few hundred metres away, lifts the trees a little, and gets louder as you walk in. Then the air changes. It gets cooler, the leaves are wet, and a fine mist settles on the lens and on your face. You stand at the foot of it for a minute, then five, and after a while you notice that the sound is not noise. It is white air, and the rest of your head is starting to clear.
