Every step up the hill is a step somebody else cut. Every line in the field is a line somebody else dug. Every grain of rice this year was promised by work done in 1340. You live in a country shaped by people whose names are not in any record. You drive on roads whose original engineers are unknown. You walk on stones cut by stonemasons who are dead beyond any family memory of them. The land remembers what the records forgot.
The Longji terraces curl down the side of a mountain in southern China and curve back up the next, planted three weeks ago and already green, water held high so it can fall slow. The villages at the top still eat from these terraces. Most of the people who built them have been dead for centuries.
