You hike up to a viewpoint a friend swore by. You checked three forecasts before leaving. They are all wrong. By the time you reach the saddle the cloud has come in from the north, the wind is up, and the postcard view you came for is reduced to one rock face the cloud cannot quite cover. You stay anyway. You eat a sandwich with cold hands. You watch the mountain hold itself out of the weather. You go down knowing you saw something better than the one in the brochure.

The Dolomites have a habit of glowing pink for about twenty minutes a day, twice. It happens at dawn and at sunset and is called *enrosadira*. The locals have always known about it. The light comes in at a low angle, the pale rock catches it, and for a short window the whole massif turns the colour of a peach. Then the wind moves a cloud, the angle changes, and the show is over until tomorrow.
