There is an hour before everyone else is awake that belongs to whoever is up. The kitchen at five forty-five with nobody else around. The first run before the streetlights have switched off. The hour at the desk before anybody has emailed, because nobody else is up. None of it lasts. By eight thirty the day belongs to everybody else again. The hour you stole from it is the one you remember at the end of the year.
A figure on a ridge above the clouds, up before the light, hood up, hands in pockets. The cloud bank is bigger than the country below it.
