You step outside to put the bin out or walk the dog before bed, and something has happened. The moon is bigger than usual. The mist has come down to roof height and made the streetlights look like watercolour. The neighbour's window is open and there is music coming from it. You stand on the doorstep for two minutes longer than you needed to, knowing the night is going to be a good one to remember.
On one of those nights, in central Italy, the full moon rises in line with a small Marian sanctuary on a wooded hill. For a few minutes the building looks put there specifically for the moon to come up behind it. It was not. The church was built four hundred years ago for reasons the moon was not consulted on. The alignment happens twice a year. Both times the village remembers to look.
