Clear water is a liar. The bottom looks half as far as it is. The fish you reach for is twice the distance and probably not interested. Things that look near are far. Things that look small are large. You can swim above a shadow for an hour, thinking it is yours, and find out at sundown it was always the boat's. The water knows. It just does not say.

A southern Pacific lagoon at midday, sand bright beneath, coral patches scattered like spills. You can lie at the surface reading a paperback and watch your own shadow doing nothing on the floor of the sea. The water is around three metres deep. Your senses say less than half that. The fish know better.

A natural fit for The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson, Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney, or any book read on a deck where the boat moves an inch every hour against a slack rope.

Colors of the World Set

Some places choose colour the way other places choose silence. A wall is blue because somebody, generations ago, decided blue was the right answer and nobody has been able to argue since. A field is purple because of a plant. The sea is turquoise because of light passing through three metres of water and stopping on white sand. You arrive, you take off your sunglasses, and the world is louder.
