You drive a coast on a road that hugs the cliff for hundreds of miles. The radio reception goes in and out. You stop at viewpoints you would never have bothered with on any other journey. Around the seventh hour the sun starts to drop and the cliffs go pink, and you pull into a turnout above a small white lighthouse on a rock and find yourself looking, without thinking about the time. The drive was the point. The lighthouse is the reason you can say so.
The Point Sur lightstation on the central California coast. Its keepers' families lived out on this rock, riding to school by narrow-gauge railroad along the cliff face. The drive to it is the famous one. The thing at the end is small, white, well kept, and was the entire reason somebody once built the road.

A lighthouse is the last building on the side of the planet that still takes its job seriously. There is a structure, there is a lamp at the top, the lamp turns through the night, and somewhere out at sea a small boat takes a slightly different decision because of it. The whole arrangement was perfected a hundred and fifty years ago and nobody has thought of a better one. Most of the world has stopped paying attention. The lighthouses have not.
